Importance of Vulnerability in Team Work

It is also important to note that the nature of this collaboration demands that we be honest and open with each other and also with students. Vulnerability allows us to go deep along with the students. Working with students about their own mental health and that of their family members can result in unexpected emotions expressed by both students and teachers. It is crucial to create a safe and brave environment that allows a holding space for each other. We have discovered that when you commit to holding space for another person, you bring your whole self to that interaction without judgment. Holding space is a very conscious act of being present. This practice goes much deeper than simply offering support to someone; it allows individuals to be where they are in that moment. Along with reflection on teaching and learning, holding space brings an awareness to instruction and the education setting that is often missing in our schools. Author and social scientist Brené Brown teaches us that vulnerability is necessary to growth. In an April 2018 blogpost on her website, “Design Is a Function of Empathy,” she states, “Collaboration requires daring leadership from everyone on the team. It means having tough conversations, staying curious, and learning how to listen.” This has proven true for every collaboration.
